What is the Management and Technology Summer Institute?
M&TSI is a rigorous, non-stop, fast-paced for-credit summer program for rising high school seniors and select juniors interested in exploring the integration of technological concepts and management principles. M&TSI provides insight into both an engineering and a business undergraduate education.
How do I apply?
The application is completed online here starting in mid-December. All application materials are due by mid February. Supporting materials (transcripts, teacher recommendations, and copies of standardized test scores) should be emailed to email@example.com or mailed to: Management & Technology Summer Institute c/o Julian Krinsky Camps & Programs 610 S. Henderson Road King of Prussia, PA 19406.
Can international students apply?
Absolutely! Each year a diverse group of students from around the globe attend M&TSI. If accepted, international students will obtain an F-1 visa with the help of the M&T Program and Penn Global’s International Student and Scholar Services office. Accepted international students will receive more details on this process.
How do I send my test scores?
Please send us a copy of the College Board score reports for all standardized tests you have taken with your other supplemental materials. Photocopies or screenshots of score reports are best – these do not need to be sent to M&TSI directly from the testing agency.
What does ‘for-credit’ mean?
M&TSI students who successfully complete the program will earn one Penn credit unit (equivalent to one college course). Typically, this credit has been used at Penn and other institutions as a technical elective or general elective. If you have questions about how this credit will transfer to a specific college or university, please contact the Registrar’s Office of that institution.
Is there a standard form for teacher recommendations?
No, teachers must submit letters on school letterhead by February 15th via email at firstname.lastname@example.org or via standard mail to: Management and Technology Summer Institute c/o Julian Krinsky Camps & Programs 610 S. Henderson Road King of Prussia, PA 19406.
Who do I contact if I have a question about my application materials?
Why is my social security number required for application? (For Domestic US applicants only)
Social security numbers of domestic students are required to enroll you in Penn’s Student Records System. Because M&TSI is an actual college course, students will be officially enrolled at Penn for the summer. To sufficiently enroll a student, the Registrar’s Office must create an official student record for each M&TSI participant, which starts with the social security number. The SSN is used to create a randomly generated Student ID, which is then used to identify the student while at the University.
What is the total cost of the summer program? Will I need any extra spending money?
M&TSI costs $7,000 per student. This fee covers room, meals, lab fees, course materials, field trips, and weekend activities. The amount of additional money needed during the program is at the discretion of the student. We usually suggest approximately $75-$125 per week for incidentals like laundry, snacks, off campus meals, and personal expenses.
What will we be doing during the three weeks of the program? Are there any sample schedules I can see?
Completing a college course in three weeks is no mean feat. Most days are spent in lectures and labs. Classes are taught in either a seminar or lecture format. Students will also conduct lab work. To further demonstrate the connections between management and technology, M&TSI takes several field trips to regional companies that emphasize this intersection. A final team project and presentation are the culminating pieces of M&TSI. for last summer’s schedule.
Do I need to wait until I have all of my application materials ready before I can apply online?
No, students may start their online application process immediately and send in the supporting materials as they are ready.
Who are the instructors for the summer program?
The principal instructors for M&TSI are Penn professors Jeffrey Babin and Sid Deliwala. Other faculty members from both the Wharton School and Penn Engineering also participate in M&TSI. Students will hear from the Dean of Penn Engineering and the Vice Dean of the Wharton School as well as the Director of the Jerome Fisher Program in Management and Technology. Penn and M&T alumni are also guest speakers throughout the program.
Where do M&TSI students live and eat?
Students live in Penn dormitories during their stay; more specifically, they stay in the Quad. Students are separated by gender on each floor. Residential Teaching Assistants (RTAs – who are current students in the M&T Program) live on the floor with the students. The RTAs hold two roles during the summer, serving as both a teaching assistant and a residential advisor.
How will participating in M&TSI affect my admissions to Penn?
There is no relationship between M&TSI and the undergraduate admissions process. Attending M&TSI does not guarantee acceptance to the M&T undergraduate program.
Can I arrive late or leave before the end of the program?
No. You are required to attend M&TSI from the first to last day. Since college course credit is awarded in a mere three weeks, it is imperative a student participate in the duration of the program.
Are scholarships or financial aid available for the program?
Yes. Scholarships are available for domestic and international students in the form of financial aid. There is an opportunity for partial or full funding based on need.
